Week of WEAVE (WoW) 2017

Description and aim of the workshop

The Week of WEAVE2 (WoW2) is a workshop, second of a series, with the aim of further developing the WEAVE-GA implementation plans of the four components of the survey (“sub-surveys”: the Galactic halo, the dynamics of the Galactic discs, Chemical labelling of Galactic populations, the Galactic open clusters), and allowing hands-on working time for the sub-survey teams.

The general goals and of the WoW workshop are:

  • To complete the design and target selection of the WEAVE-GA survey in light of the imminent Gaia DR

  • To ensure the proper degree of communication and discussions within the WEAVE-GA steering group (researchers responsible for survey science preparation and survey planning) and Survey Working Group (SWG, in charge of the implementation of the survey and previous tests)

  • To integrate the WEAVE-GA survey within the whole WEAVE project

The specific topics of discussion will be:

  • Review of plans for the four WEAVE-GA sub-surveys & updates

  • Review of the Gaia DR2

  • Assessment of Gaia data readiness/issues for our purpose, mitigations, etc.

  • Work toward the final target selection function for the four sub-surveys
(i.e. including Gaia data + ancillary multi-colour photometric data) & footprint

  • Discussions on the WEAVE LR and HR performances (stemming from the end-to-end WEAVE simulations performed in the framework of the Operational Rehearsal 2 in June)

  • Discussion with the WEAVE Core Processing System (CPS: data reduction), Advanced Processing System (APS: classification and analysis), and WEAVE Archive System (WAS) teams

  • Integration of the WEAVE-GA survey within the WEAVE operation and dataflow (SWG, CPS, APS, WAS)
