WEAVE Science Verification ING-community workshop



Purpose of workshop

Members of the ING user community were invited to submit Letters of Intent for (non-survey) Science Verification (SV) projects. The aim of this workshop is to introduce the PIs and their teams who have been invited to submit full proposals based on their Letters of Intent to WEAVE's capabilities, the data-reduction and analysis pipelines and the data archive, and to help the them prepare their final SV proposals for submission by 15 December 2019, as well as the eventual preparation of observations for successful proposals.

The workshop is planned to start at 09:30 on Thursday 14 November, and is planned to finish at 16:30 on Friday 15 November. The final programme with timings will be made available to participants in advance of the workshop.

Registration fee

There will be no registration fee for the workshop. Participants will be expected to pay for their own accommodation and lunches.

On arrival

On the days of the workshop, participants will need to sign in at the security lodge at the entrance to the IAC car park (please have your passport with you). The IAC contact person for this workshop is J. Alfonso L. Aguerri; please give Alfonso's name at the security lodge.

Programme

The workshop will take place over two days (14-15 November). The first half day is intended to provide participants with a gentle introduction to WEAVE and its capabilities, with further focus on the following topics:

  • ING operations in the era of the WEAVE Survey
  • Commissioning and Science Verification (SV) – what each of these will focus on, and why a  period of SV is required
  • interactions between the ING user community and WEAVE Survey management as relevant to SV observations

On Thursday afternoon, we will move on to a session focusing on the output from SV; topics to be presented / discussed include the following:

  • what type of data (products) will be available to the PIs following SV?
  • who will have access to these data (products), and how and when will they be accessible?

On Friday, we will move on to hands-on sessions, in which participants will be introduced to how WEAVE SV observations will need to be prepared by PIs and their teams. The scheduling of SV observations will proceed in a different way to standard WEAVE observations during normal operations, and the implications of this and other considerations for SV-specific preparations on the part of PIs and their teams will be clarified. For accepted proposals, extra support for the preparation of ING-community PI-led WEAVE SV observations will be provided by the WEAVE Survey management.

We strongly encourage one person from each team to attend the workshop in person If you and your team members are not familiar with WEAVE operations and preparations that will be required for WEAVE observations. If you think this will be difficult, please contact Shoko (jin@astro.rug.nl).

We would like to encourage as much interaction between the participants and speakers / session leaders as possible during this workshop, and the programme will be scheduled with plenty of time for questions and discussions in order to achieve this aim. 

Participants will also have the chance to ask the ING-WEAVE SV TAC members in person any questions they may have in preparing their proposals.

Travelling to Tenerife and onwards to the IAC

Tenerife has two international airports – TFN (Tenerife Norte/North, formerly Los Rodeos Airport) and TFS (Tenerife Sur/South).

From TFN: the IAC and most hotels in La Laguna are most easily reachable by taxi (~10 minutes) from TFN and costs around €10.

From TFS: a taxi from TFS to La Laguna will cost around €80, which may be a good option if sharing the taxi with others. This will take around 45 minutes. It is also possible to travel between TFS and La Laguna by bus. Bus line 111 (from just outside of the airport) goes to Santa Cruz (takes 1-1.5 hours). A taxi from Santa Cruz de La Palma to La Laguna costs around €15, or it is possible to take the tram or another bus.

Travelling between TFS and TFN: bus line 343 is a non-stop bus connecting the two airports directly (takes 50 minutes). A taxi from TFN to La Laguna (IAC and hotels) costs around €10 and takes around 10 minutes.
